Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are devices that allow direct communication between the brain and external devices, such as computers, robots, or prosthetics. BCIs can measure brain signals, such as electrical activity or blood flow, and translate them into commands or feedback for the device. BCIs can also stimulate the brain with electrical currents or magnetic fields to modulate its activity or induce sensations.
BCIs have the potential to revolutionize human-machine interaction in 2023, by enabling new ways of controlling, enhancing, and augmenting our cognitive and physical abilities. For example, BCIs could enable us to control devices with our thoughts, enhance our memory and learning, or restore lost functions due to injury or disease. Some of the applications of BCIs that are expected to emerge or advance in 2023 are:
- Neuralink: Neuralink is a company founded by Elon Musk that aims to develop a high-bandwidth BCI that can connect the human brain to artificial intelligence. Neuralink has already demonstrated a wireless BCI that can record and stimulate the brain activity of pigs. In 2023, Neuralink plans to start human trials of its BCI, which involves implanting thin electrodes into the brain through a small hole in the skull.
- Facebook Reality Labs: Facebook Reality Labs is a research division of Facebook that focuses on developing immersive technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality. Facebook Reality Labs is also working on a non-invasive BCI that can decode speech from brain signals. The goal is to create a wearable device that can enable silent communication and control of virtual environments with the mind.
- Neurable: Neurable is a company that develops software and hardware for creating brain-controlled experiences. Neurable has created a wireless headset that can measure brain signals from the scalp and use machine learning to interpret them. Neurable’s headset can be used to control games, apps, and devices with the mind.
